Ground Beef Recall Can I Buy Frozen Meatballs

This ground beef recall already spans nine states.

It's been months since we've seen a major food recall, and the last one—a romaine lettuce recall—rolled out back in November 2019. Well, it's that time again. Unfortunately, the new year brings new risk to your kitchen with a ground beef recall that affects more than 2,000 pounds of product.

The was issued by Amity Packing Company Inc. and FSIS on January 24. The contaminated beef was distributed to retail locations in nine states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Check out the full FSIS statement here.

What products are recalled?

You probably guessed that ground beef is on the hot seat this time around, but be on the lookout for 1-lb. vacuum-packed packages of Pre 95% lean/5% fat ground beef. Amity Packing Company, based in Chicago, Illinois, began an investigation when consumers reported finding clear plastic pieces in the meat. Plastic contamination poses a choking hazard—and can melt into your dinner if not caught before cooking.

Fortunately, there are no reports of illness or injury yet. FSIS and Amity Packing Company want to make sure no recalled ground beef is lurking at the back of your fridge and freezer.

So…whyare there so many food recalls lately? The FDA explains.

How do I know if I have a bad package?

Luckily, these guys are pretty easy to spot. Every package bears the lot code "0060" and the case code "0060." You can also go by the establishment number "EST. 6916" and Use/Freeze By date of "01/31/2020."

You'll find these codes printed on the right, front side of the package. If your Pre ground beef doesn't bear any of these numbers, it's safe for consumption. Still, take a glance at the Pre ground beef product images just to make sure.

Get ahead of the recalls by downloading this food recall app that warns you ahead of time.

I have one of these! What should I do with it?

If you find a bad package of ground beef in your fridge, toss it ASAP. You can also return the ground beef to the place of purchase for a refund. Retailers will typically do an exchange for a non-recalled product, too, if you're still in need of a quick weeknight dinner.
